The mayor of the town of Gölyazı in the sub-district of Terme in the Black Sea province of Samsun, Cemil Dürümlü, opened the “First International Gölyazı Amazon, Environment, Culture and Tourism Festival” on July 28. The mayor said that the region was famed as being the home of the legendary Amazons. He explained that the aim of the festival was to re-create and honor this page out of ancient history.
The festival features various contests that are open only to ladies. Ladies’ groups from neighboring countries are participating in the contests and folk dancing is a part of the festivities. The festival will go on through July 30.
The Amazons are known in history as a tribe of women who founded the ancient city of Thamiskyra along the shores of the Terme River in 1200 B. C. Famous as warriors, legend has it that this tribe employed men as laborers and servants. The Amazons are said to have taken men into their tribe as prisoners of war for purposes of procreation, killing them later.
