Skiing and mountaineering in Rize

July 20 — Plans are under way for extending Rize’s tourist season to include year-round mountain sports. Host to some 400,000 local and foreign tourists each year, the Black Sea town of Rize, with its green hills, is projected to enlarge its capacities to achieve a year-round appeal to tourists from all over the world. Particularly popular for its mountains and cool plateaus, the region’s “Kaçkar Mountains” project, supported by the World Bank, is to be launched in August.

  Foreign investors have already begun work on the construction of a skiing and recreation center, while Rize Province is launching a venture to establish another resort area on the plateaus. Rize Tourism Director Atilla Karahasanoğlu says that work to make Rize a full-fledged tourist site, complete with an information office and trained personnel, has already started in the province.
       
PERFECT LOCATION FOR MOUNTAIN SPORTS
       Pointing to the importance of taking advantage of the hot spring mineral waters of the region, Karahasanoğlu said that Rize was the perfect location for all kinds of mountain sports. Expressing his confidence that in a few years Rize would become an extraordinary resort area, Karahasanoğlu said that besides projects for a skiing center, the province intended to promote mountain sports of all kinds, including trekking, rafting, mountain climbing and parachuting.
