July 21 —  The Supreme Court ruled in June that the monastery be transferred from the authority of the Culture Ministry to the General Directorate of Foundations. It will now go back to the Culture Ministry, which paid the nominal fee of TL 5 million ($8) for the right to launch a 10-year restoration of the historic monastery.

The 14th-century Sümela Monastery, perched 270 meters above a deep gorge near the northern city of Trabzon, is adorned with brilliant frescoes. The restoration of the Monastery and its environs was being carried out before — and even after — it was appropriated to the General Directorate of Foundations.
Minister of Culture İstemihan Talay, speaking on the restoration work, stated that thousands of tourists visit the Monastery each year, adding that he was very pleased that his Ministry’s request had been granted. He thanked State Minister Yüksel Yalova and General Director of Foundations Nurettin Yardımcı for their help in having their request accepted.
