| | | The 14th-century Sümela Monastery, perched 270 meters above a deep gorge near the northern city of Trabzon, is adorned with brilliant frescoes. The restoration of the Monastery and its environs was being carried out before and even after it was appropriated to the General Directorate of Foundations.
Minister of Culture İstemihan Talay, speaking on the restoration work, stated that thousands of tourists visit the Monastery each year, adding that he was very pleased that his Ministrys request had been granted. He thanked State Minister Yüksel Yalova and General Director of Foundations Nurettin Yardımcı for their help in having their request accepted.
