World Bank loan for historical sites
 
World Bank Turkey Desk Chief Ajay Chibber says $50 million loan will be extended to Turkey for the salvaging of historical ruins in the southeast of the country

August 23 —  World Bank Turkey Desk Chief Ajay Chibber, on an investigative trip to Turkey’s southeastern regions with Culture Minister İstemihan Talay, said that the World Bank would be contributing to the salvaging of Turkey’s historical ruins with a $50 million loan. He said that this amount would be channelled toward archeological work in the southeast, including Mardin and Zeugma, and that more aid would be extended in future.

Halfeti in southeastern Turkey is one of the historical sites awaiting rescue.
        Stating that the aim of his tour through southeastern Turkey was to research the culture and historical heritage of Anatolian civilizations, Ajay Chibber said that it was imperative that historical locations be saved for posterity. He said his intention was to determine how much of a contribution the World Bank could make to the area, explaining that he would summarize his observations in a report. Culture Minister İstemihan Talay thanked Chibber for his efforts and voiced his belief that the historical ruins of the southeastern regions of Turkey would provide the world with valuable insight into the countless civilizations that have lived in Anatolia. He said that both the World Bank and UNESCO had looked positively upon Turkey’s request for aid for cultural projects and that Ajay Chibber’s visit at this time was a clear indication of this.
