Yaşar Kemal’s wife Thilda dies

Thilda Kemal, the wife of Turkey’s most prominent novelist, Yasar Kemal who translated nearly all of her husband’s works into English, has died
Thilda Kemal died Wednesday of pulmonary complications at an İstanbul hospital, she was 78.
Thilda Kemal met and married Yasar Kemal, who has been nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature, in Istanbul fifty years ago while working for a literary agency. Fluent in English, Spanish and French, she translated 17 of his novels into English and kept a close watch on the translations of his books into the other two languages. Many say the author, best known for his novel Mehmet my Hawk, owed his international acclaim to his wife.
In the 1960’s Thilda Kemal founded two publishing houses, Ararat and Ant. Her publication of leftist books landed her briefly in prison after the 1971 military takeover. Kemal is survived by her husband, their son Raşit and a grandchild. Kemal was born Thilda Serrero to a prominent Jewish family in Istanbul. Her grandfather, Jak Pasha, was Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid’s chief doctor. She is to be buried Friday in a Muslim ceremony in İstanbul.
