| | | Mr. Türk announced that 13 inmates had died in İstanbuls Bayrampaşa prison, one inmate died in Ümraniye two in Bursa prison in Northwest of the country and one in Çankırı prison in central Anatolia. 36 inmates at Bayrampaşa prison were wounded. During the operations two gendarmerie soldiers died as a result of confrontations with armed inmates. Justice Minister Türk said 184 people had been stopped from conducting death fasts and a further 634 were made to cease their hunger strikes. After the ending of illegal activities in 18 prisons some 490 inmates from these prisons were transferred to the controversial F type prisons. As previously reported prisoners were demanding they not be transferred to the F type prisons.
Mr. Türk said most of the prisons had received enormous damage during the operations. Therefore the useage of F type prisons became a necessity due to damage suffered by the conventional prisons. Mr. Türk also replied to criticisms that negotiations could have had some benefit in solving the prisons crisis without a security operation, over which he said negotiations had taken place until the last minute, but the prisoners demands for dormitories with 18-20 people capacity had not changed. Mr. Türk reiterated that intervention into prisons could not have been delayed any further and the state had to intervene, the citizens of the country must realise this.
