Omer Sabanci, the chairman of the Turkish Industrialist and Businessmen Association (TUSIAD), told a seminar on Turkish priorities on globalisation that emotion shoul not play a part in Turkey’s EU membership process.
“This process has to distance itself from sentimentalism, and use patience and common sense,” Sabanci told the seminar, held in Istanbul Sunday.
TUSIAD’s mission was to have Ankara complete the EU membership process successfully, he said.
“If Turkey realises its duties and maintains a realist approach during the negotiation process then we will have an advantageous position,” Sabanci said.
While the European Parliament was pleased with some of the measures taken by Turkey to strengthen the rights of women, the low level of employment among women in Turkey, standing at 25 percent, was a matter of concern, Sabanci said. Giving women greater equality, these needed to be fully implemented he said and more done to increase the presence of women in the workforce.
