Speaking after his return from the informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Ireland, Gül said that apart from discussion of the official agenda items, which included Iraq, the Middle East and Kosovo, he had also broached the question of Cyprus. Turkeys position and the position of the two sides on the island before separate the referendums in Cyprus were taken up in the meeting, he said. What should be done if both sides say yes or north of the island says yes and the south says no? Those were discussed comprehensively. This was the main agenda item of the meeting and it was as if the meeting was held for this issue. If the Turkish Cypriots voted in favour of adopting the United Nations proposal for reunification of the two states on the island and the Greek Cypriots voted against it in the April 24 referendum, Gül said that it would be necessary to revise the regulations which will be applied to Turkish Cypriot side after the Greek Cypriots joined the EU, The Turkish Cypriots side should not be punished by initiatives that will be launched in case of a negative development, he said. I expressed this in the meeting and other ministers extended great support. Gül said that the EU Foreign Ministers thought that the UN plan for reunification presented an historic opportunity and that the plan should be accepted. There was nothing left for the Turkish government to do for the sake of the island, Gül said, as it was now up to the Cypriot peoples to make their decision. We have explained everything. We have said we will respect to the result. Everybody knows what we think and what we see in favour of Turkish side, he said. | ||||
