The head of the archaeological team, Professor Cengiz Işık, said that last year mapping of the sacred sanctuary of the Goddess Heto (Sultaniye Spa) had been completed and that now the excavations had begun.
Işık said that the Sultaniye Spas were an archaic health centre and that their excavations would uncover its past and make a contribution to tourism.
“The excavations that are being conducted in the waters of the lake, where there is limited visibility, are utilising advanced technology and the support of computer and arithmetic photogrammetry,” he said in a statement.
Locals of Köyceğiz are curious over whether the archaeological study will prove the legend that the site became inundated after an earthquake right.
