EU tells Turkey not to send troops into Northern Iraq
Any deployment of Turkish troops into Northern Iraq could put Turkey’s bid of gaining EU membership at risk, an EU spokesman said on Monday.
March 24— Turkey has been warned by the European Union not to dispatch units of its armed forces into Northern Iraq, with the suggestion that such a move would harm its hopes of becoming a member of the bloc.

EU spokesman Jean-Christophe Filori said Monday that the EU would not approve any military deployment by Ankara into the region.
“Any action by a neighbour that could destabilise the situation would be most unwelcome,” he said at a press briefing. He added that Ankara should understand the full implications of any such action.
However, Filori said that he was not issuing a new warning but repeating a message from the EU leaders summit, held last week. The statement said that all countries of the region to refrain from actions that could lead to further instability.
The EU warning follows Washington’s repeated calls to Ankara not to deploy troops in Northern Iraq.
